Welcome to the World of W.i.g.-for [Fierce] Women in General!
Some of you may remember W.i.g. Magazine from 1995-the first little 'zine to hit newsstands covering women in action sports, rock climbing, dance, art, music, alternative fashion, craftiness, poetry, music, car culture, and lots of super inspiring young women doing it for themselves. At the time, we were leaders of a movement that we didn't really know we'd actually started. With stories ranging from Inga Muscio's self-abortion piece, to Holly Morris trekking Cuba, to pro snowboarders like Michele Taggart, poets and writers like Lisa Bessolo, Monique Cole, guy contribs like Billy Miller and Joe Donnelley, and Aleta Reese creating W.i.g. Comix and the introduction of Vespula (an insect-like heroine that stung-out evil), and amazing photos by Cheryl Dunn and co-founder Dawn Kish, we were revolutionaries creating a magazine and a website intended to stoke people on life and Women in General.
Why revive W.i.g. some 15 years later? In a way, it never really went anywhere...just got stuffed into my back closet-those few precious issues--and as life rolled on, I got writing and producing for things that actually paid. I'm still not getting paid for W.i.g., but maybe that's the point: Labor of Love.
Funny thing is, if ever there was a time for W.i.g., it's now. We all need a place that taps into women's culture worldwide, giving you the real dish on active lifestyles, art, music, vids, books...and life so deeply, that you can feel its heartbeat. Ask any Wigger and they will tell you, it's more than a mag or a website: W.i.g. is an addiction that speaks to so many of us because it comes from our own true voices.
W.i.g.'s purpose is to encourage thoughts and ideas among women and men by becoming a forum for discussion, inspiration, shared wisdom, and adventure in the arts, music, sports, and women's culture. Wiggers tend to be the movers and shakers -- diving into everything they do. Here, you'll find passionate tales of women musicians, alternative sports athletes, environmentalists, book readers, DJs, bike messengers, videographers, motocrossers, Vespa-lovers, alt fashion designers, and more. Add in an animated female comic heroine, and you've got the world of W.i.g.
While the W.i.g. website continues to evolve, please check back daily for the latest news and developments. We're going to sprinkle in some of our old, classic pieces with the new. Our intention is to expand into other media forums on an international scale, including video (posting several soon), documentaries (we've done 1 if you want to check it out), and radio. Our goals are two-fold: To continue telling stories that need to be told, and to continue creating tunnels of communication by providing places for women's creativity, physicality, and ideas to shine in an open forum.
Welcome to W.i.g.-the New World Forum for [fierce, eclectic, shy, intelligent, artistic, passionate, creative, outlandish, proactive, and provocative] Women in General.
