Eskimo Models Fashion Shoot at the Blue Lagoon and Hotel Borg
Two trendsetting young women from Reykjavik, Iceland, Asta and Thorey, both 27 and former models, co-founded a unique agency called Eskimo Models. They hosted their first international fashion show last summer called Futurice featuring the new (and only) wave of designers and models from the Arctic Circle. It set off an original spark in the fashion and design industries, and prompted Thorey to launch a spin-off called Siberian Models in Russia. "We tend to set up agencies for designers where no one else wants to go," she explains.
During a week in Reykjavik, fashion photographer Cheryl Dunn and I embarked on a journey through one of the most cultural city's of northern Europe. Eskimo Models helped us select two prominent young designers in Iceland and two of Iceland's most famous models--Lulla, known for her ethereal Nordic look, and Ford-model winner, Rakel. We did a fashion at the Hotel Borg and eccentric Blue Lagoon, which is a stone's throw away from the airport and a must-soak adventure for anyone traveling to and from Europe. The results were breathtaking imagery and interviews that provide a fresh blend of personality and fashion in an odd cultural setting.
While Reykjavik is setting the pace for fashion, design, and music in Northern Europe, most Americans still think of it (if they think of it at all) akin to traveling to the North Pole. It's an easy and worthwhile layover between New York and London.
The following is a photo gallery displaying the images from photographer and W.i.g. Artist of the Week, Cheryl Dunn, during our fashion shoot at the Hotel Borg and Blue Lagoon. Coming soon is an in-depth interview with Eskimo Models co-founder, Thorey, who tells us what it's like to run more than your typical modeling agency in a very northern outpost, plus news on the 2nd annual Futurice show to be held in November, 02002.
