The Art and Science of Tree-sitting
Photos by Rachel Pfotenhauer
Tree-sitting is far more serious and complicated than most people realize.
It's not just someone building a tree-fort and sitting there with a pack of
food and a sleeping bag. A tree-sitting vigil like Julia Butterfly's in Luna
demanded a community of strong, dedicated individuals with skills in hiking,
climbing, tree defense, and overall commitment to protectors of the redwoods
and those who sit in them. The ground support crew organizes supply
runs-scheduling resupply hikes, buying groceries, recharging batteries,
running errands, and delivering mail. They also recycle the tree-sitters
garbage and refuse. Julia Butterfly's tree-sit was the longest-ever
individual vigil.
