Sleater-Kinney "Dig Me Out" Is it Rock'n'Roll love or the love of Rock'n'Roll? According to Sleater-Kinney, it's both. The songwriting of Sleater-Kinney expresses this clearly with a mixture of love songs and dum-dum-dee-dee-dee-dum-dum-dee-dum-do's, as well as the music with hand claps and those good 'ole rockn' beats, and a lot of other fun stuff. Corin Tuckers amphetamine Tiny Tim, urgent vocals switch off and intertwine with cool vocal-teases from Carrie Brownstein. It's the same with their guitar duty. Newest member Janet Weiss on drums, completes and perfects this volcanic trio. Live, the music gets better with the sexy movements of Carrie on guitar and Corin letting everyone know that theyıre playing for us to have fun-especially the girls. Rude Girls Here are three big ska delights for your "dislocate" pleasure. "Big 5" is fronted by Jennie Mathias, formerly of Belle Star, and backed with Londonıs Bad Manners, Nick Welsh and Martin Stewart--veterans to traditional ska and two-tone. Jennie, soulfully fresh vocals: from red wine smooth to pure English spunk. Add rushing organ pumps, whipping guitars, and shameless skanking bass and drums and it rounds out the rest of the band. "Girls Go Ska" and "Ska Down Her Way" are both ska compilations featuring women (mostly on lead vocals) in a "third wave" of ska music, with some all-star exceptions. Both of these comps feature bands from across the states, each with unique takes on ska and style. For ska-beats sake, they're worth checking out. Big 5, "In Your Face," Triple X Records POB 862529, LA, CA 90086-2529; "Girls Go Ska" compilation, Simmerdown Productions, P.O. Auntie Christ "Life Could Be a Dream"Being an X fan, and inspired by Exene Cervenkova, I didn't think I would have any trouble taking a liking to Auntie Christ. So when I went out and purchased this CD and sped home to play it, I was totally excited and got a big, fat punk rush. I haven't come down yet. Old memories and feelings come flashing back with Exene lyrics, who now takes the reigns on guitar along with other former X member, DJ Bonebrake on drums, and Rancid's bassist, Matt Freeman. On tour with Stone Fox, whos bassist punched in a double shift, playing both bands sets, due to Mr. Freemans absence on the road. Exene then supplied both adredaline charged guitar and social awakenings, stating Nike rips off geniuses, we all wear uniforms, and the evil of TV. Lookout Records, P.O. Rock for a Cure "She's a Rebel" Rock for a Cure is not only a non-profit organization to raise money and awareness to fight breast cancer, but is also heads-up on health care legislation concerning this deadly disease. They reach the youth and generate dollars through royalty contributions of "She's a Rebel"--a benefit CD. And do we have some rebels on this CD! Kim Shattuck of the Muffs starts off the attack on this release, as she did when she wrongly kicked our W.i.g. photographer, Jon Jensen, in the face, accusing him of shooting up her dress at a recent show. Also in good company is Tribe 8, Teen Angels, 7 Year Bitch, Nitocris, and more rockin' she-rebels. To support the cause while listening to good music, buy a CD or contact: Rock for a Cure, 1021 Arlinton Blvd #E844, Arlington, VA 22209; (703)525-0435. Demolition Doll Rods "Tasty" I've seen these Detroit rockers once in a San Diego club and fell in love with their raw, raunchy, motor-city wildness. Recently, at Lollapalooza's second stage, I had a chance to talk with Margaret, vox/guitar, who's in control of her body and expressions (being a stripper and all). She was wondering why "mothers don't teach their daughters about masturbating." Dan the guitarist/vox, the cross-dressed boy-toy of the band, who has no problem getting in touch with his feminine side, said he thinks prostitution should be legalized. Christine the drummer, who plays only a snare and tom drum standing up, obviously has no problem with porn (well, no one had a problem with porn). It all goes hand-in-hand with their music and stage show outfits: G-string action with custom-made pasties, go-go boots, and a lot of tail feather shakin'. Today it was red-yellow-green plastic orbs to represent traffic lights--very appropriate considering they sing about drag racing. So, for some freaky, crampy, blues, take a big nasty "Tasty" bite of the DDR. They won't mind. In the Red Recordings, 2627 E Strong Pl, Anaheim, CA 92806. --L.K. |
