"Ghost World," by Daniel Clowes, Fantagraphics Comic Books, $9.95
Enter the world of two complicated girls, Enid and Rebecca, who hate Sassy
magazine and love all the freaks in their neighborhood. They will not go
gently into the absurd night of adulthood and their strong bond with
each other keeps them from losing their minds as they deal with teen angst
and ennui. This book is a real treat not only because it is beautifully illustrated in a black and blue duotone, but also because the story is beautifully drawn and you care about what happens to these two young women. Their world is cool and creepy. Enid and Rebecca hang out in diners, go bowling, think about sleeping with their friend Josh and stalk the neighborhood Satanists at the grocery store to see what they put in their cart (answer: Lunchables). Of course, since change is the only constant in life, they have to start dealing with their changing relationship and the realization that it can't remain the same forever.
