GIRLY GIRLS AND GIRLY GEEKS
An obsession with Vespas is one thing all of these women readily admit to having. None is ashamed of it, nor is any ready to check into a two-stroke rehabilitation center. And while the Vespa movement in the United States still pales in comparison to Europe, it's a movement that these women are dedicated to - seemingly for life.

Vespa riders sometimes are compared to Harley riders, because both groups are sub-cultures that have certain lifestyles and fashions. But Easton says the scooter scene transcends any stereotypes and boundaries that people might see. She points out some myths and misconceptions about Vespa aficionados.

"For guys I'd say the misconception is that they are wusses, when usually quite the opposite is true," she says. "And for women my experience has been that the opposite idea exists in that people think the scooter-riding chicks are real hard-asses. That's where they compare to the image of Harley women. The thing is, the women in my club range in age from 16 to 40 and are students, computer geeks, advertising managers, every type of woman you would find anywhere. Yes, we are hard-core in that we ride a lot and it takes a certain spunky-tough chick to ride any motorbike, but we are still very much women who like girly things too."
