Sites, 'Zines, Books, and Guides for [fierce] Women in General
Reviewed by Lisa Okey
Websites:
Angstgrrl.com-very girl friendly with emphasis on grrl knowledge. To
liberate you got to educate. Links to fun sites like Brazenhussy.com and
Cybergrrlz.com (this one is for young girls with digs at Britney Spears,
calling her Slutney Spears.)
Breakupgirl.com-Great looking site that is more girly than feminist. I
liked the gossipy entertainment column called G-spot and the link to
Hysteria Publications, which publishes women cartoonists.
Hipmama.com-a very cool site who's latest offerings include sex and parenting, an interview with the art director of Bust magazine, Laurie Henzel (a.k.a. Areola), book and music reviews, and of course, a shopping page. Hip Mama started as a 'zine by Ariel Gore, a very cool single mom. She tells it how it is raising a kid; how moms need to find alone time and not feel guilty all the time. Sample article: "The Art of Loafing."
www.shambhala.com/pc/index.html-This web site for Shambhala Publications features the fully-ordained Buddhist nun Pema Chodron. You can find out her teaching schedule and read excerpts from her books like: "Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves. . . We already have everything we need. There is no need for self-improvement."
www.grannyg.bc.ca/tibet/tibet.html-The Tibetan Women's Association is a
non-governmental organization based in Dharamsala, India, and has over 37
branches. Main concerns: 1) violations of Tibetan women s rights in Tibet,
especially reproductive rights; 2) increasing torture and imprisonment of
Tibetan women by a Chinese government. Also see www.fotwa.org for more information on Tibetan refugees, including two nuns who were imprisoned for three years and tortured for yelling out freedom slogans. This site is colorfully designed with folk and children's art.
www.igc.org/gfw/-Global Fund for Women is dedicated to improving women's health, economic independence, and access to education through grants and seed money to non-profit organizations. Links to The Heifer Project International, a program which provides women with food and income-producing animals (like goats or buffaloes) along with training in community leadership and environmentally sound farming. Very cool since women produce most of the developing world's food and do 2/3 of the world's work (www.heifer.org/end_hunger/women.html).
theonion.com-Very funny media satire written in a fake newspaper format
without a clear political motive. Everyone is a target. Sample headlines: "Mountain Dew-Related Sky-Surfing Deaths On The Rise," "Drugs Win Drug War," "Nation's Experts Give Up-From Now On, You're On Your Own, Say Experts," and under Health, "Marijuana Linked to Sitting Around and Getting High."
